I recently discovered through my heritage DNA test that I am 5.8% Balkan, tracing back to my great-great-grandparents. This revelation has been both surprising and enlightening, connecting me to a rich cultural lineage beyond what I knew.
Both of my parents are from the Dominican Republic and are of mixed heritage, reflecting a history of diverse influences on the island. The Balkans, comprising countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia, have unique cultural traits and traditions that resonate with me deeply.
One thing I’ve noticed about myself is my misplaced loyalty—a characteristic my doctor has even pointed out. I am extremely loyal, sometimes to my own detriment. It’s one of those traits that seems to align with the Balkan spirit. Another is my tenacity. When I set out to learn or accomplish something, I don’t stop until every stone is unturned. These traits make me proud of this part of my heritage.
Balkan culture is also vibrant and rich in tradition, from lively music and dance to flavorful food. Common dishes include hearty stews, grilled meats, and pastries like burek, each reflecting a blend of influences from various regions.
Uncovering this part of my ancestry has allowed me to embrace new dimensions of my identity and better understand the deep-rooted traits within me. Heritage DNA tests offer incredible insight, and in my experience, they have been remarkably accurate.
