When someone you care about is going through a tough time, knowing how to respond can make a difference. Here are some “Do’s and Don’ts” for offering compassionate support:
Do’s
Respond in a Timely Manner: Show you care by reaching out early with a card, call, or visit. It lets them know they’re not alone.
Offer Simple, Understanding Statements: Phrases like “I feel for you” convey empathy without overwhelming. Keep it simple and supportive.
Don’ts
Don’t Delay Your Contact: Waiting too long can make them feel forgotten. Reach out early.
Avoid Minimizing Their Pain: Comments like “It’s probably for the best” or “You’ll get over it” may seem dismissive. Aim to validate their feelings instead.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)
This verse reminds us that words have power—they can hurt or heal. By choosing words that show understanding, we can offer genuine comfort and support.
