Enduring the Holiday Blues: Simple Ways to Reclaim Your Joy

By

The holiday season is often painted as a time of joy, but for many, it can be a season of sadness, grief, or reflection. Some mourn loved ones they’ve lost, others face the pain of a breakup or divorce, and many feel the weight of holiday pressure. If you’re feeling this way, know this: You are not alone.

I’ll never forget one particular holiday experience that changed my view on gift-giving. I spent time and money picking out a thoughtful gift for a co-worker—a beautiful gift set with shower gel, lotion, and a soft loofah. It was elegant and something I’d love to receive myself. But when I gave it to her, she was offended, saying, “What are you trying to say, Evy? That I stink?”

Her reaction really hurt me. I realized that giving under pressure takes the joy out of it. From that moment on, I stopped letting a calendar dictate my kindness. I give gifts when it feels right, not because it’s expected.

If you’re feeling the holiday blues, here are two ways to reclaim your peace:

1️⃣ Shift Your Focus to Kindness

Let go of the idea of a “perfect holiday.” Instead, ask yourself, “What can I do to bring joy to someone else?” Call a grandparent, check in on a neighbor, or send an encouraging message to a friend. Acts of kindness lift both your spirit and theirs.

2️⃣ Give Without Deadlines

Who says gifts need a special day? Show love year-round. Take someone out in April, buy flowers in August, or write a thank-you note in March. Love is timeless.

The holidays don’t define your joy—your heart does.
